an easy lending hand - great relief

there is this female cat, which i called miaw-miaw (i know this is a lousy name, but hey, it's passionate! :p) in my college which has just given birth to 4 super cute litte kitties 2 months ago. plus the fact that miaw-miaw is very manja and playful with me, i often visit her little family (mom n kitties, no dads of course) a few doors next to mine, in my hostel.

This morning miaw-miaw looked weird, she looked at me, ran towards me as if she wanted something to me. i felt weird. When i looked at her closely, wow, she's drooling badly, her chin seemed ulcerated. expectedly i tried to touch her mouth, which she resisted (usually she would just swoon at a touch of mine). And she did not allow her kitties to suckle. hmm.. weird... Then my junior who has been taking care of her came out and told me tat she had not been drinking for 2 days. She wanted to drink, but everytime she touches water she'll just walk away. Oh wow, water phobia, i was thinking, "Rabies." My junior was shocked at my quick diagnosis. For your information, I WAS JUST JOKING. "She's eating ok," my junior added.

Then i told my cute junior to hold her firmly, while i open up her mouth. Miaw-miaw struggled a great deal, i thought the entire block heard her well. Anyway, I found this in her mouth - floating, stuck on to her mouth's roof horizontally, was a little bone fragment, abt 2cm long, long enough to get stuck between both her canine teeth. Her gums were abit hyperaemic, slightly bleeding. And her breath was ewww! I suppose she was so dehydrated her kidney function was temporarily compromised causing the blood urea level to build up which resulted in that ugly smell. i took a forcep, and pulled the bone out.

The next thing was she started drinking non-stop. guess she was terribly dehydrated.. and then she allowed the kitties to suckle.. =)

yep! case #1 diagnosed and resolved. =)

Moral of the story? don't feed bones to your animals - be it dog or cat. you won't know they're in trouble, until they're SERIOUSLY in trouble.

Final Yr Project Presentation!

last sat n sun (1&2 Apr) was the final yr project presentation for the DVM5s!! oh wow.. after such a torture in researching, we finali got the chance to boast abt our project! hehe.. tat's the very optimistic version to describe how we felt. the practical version is of course.. "tension! stress! gila!!".

generally, i conclude this project as the best my class ever presented(compared to comprehensive), for most of us. coz, in comprehensive, most of us read the script n dun care a single thing whether the audience existed or not.. and the projected questions during Q n A session usually dun get the answers. while in this project, most of us presented very smartly, it is as though a sales man talking abt his product, and i was truly amazed, *salute!* and the best part was the questionin n answering.. most of us answered the right thing..
and these made the presentation ever more interesting!

here are a few interesting snaps for you to ponder on. hehe.. courtesy of Mr. Ting - the official technician of DVM5 2006. =) free advertisement for him.. good buddy ma.. :P

so these is the line of ppl who loved the Q n A session to the maximum... ;) look at their gesture and body language. haha. .to make life more interesting, enlarge their pic n zoom into their faces. ;p

n the judges of Group B were saying.. "hmm.. hmm.. oh ya kah? oh wow.. beautiful... haaa.a.." can anyone explain wat made Prof T smile tat way? n do take a look at mr macho beside prof T. and the audience was magnificient! ;) all kinds of ppl askd questions.. n of course.. many were planted ones as well. ;)

and this was me..
and this Mr Syahar - the bird guy..

oh wow.. when did these superbs sneak into DVM5?! they've been disguising under the name of L---, P---Y--- and F----! how dare!

and that's the -END-

Let's celebrate!! ;D yahoo!!!

it's the final countdown!

oh gosh.. it's already been a month since i last blogged! do forgive me (for my frequent visitors, hehe). life wasn't busy nor hectic.. but just couldn't find an urge to blog. right now, i'm doing discussions, revisions everyday.. relaxin n sleeping at the same time.. eating... nae.. not much variety to eat.

it's now 20days to go, until my comprehensive exam, where i will be tested on every single little detail i learned since first year, right to the end of fifth year. wow.. worse than PMR.. SPM.. but i still vote STPM tougher than this. no play play with stp..

so i won't update much here.. just a few announcements.. first abt my looming exams.. secondly, i'm graduatin! haha.. tat's after i pass the exams of course. thirdly, i'm scheduled for a sabah trip in may. ngek ngek.. finali get a chance to smell sabah.. fourthly, i'm moving back to kB!!! oh... finally.. ;)

till then.. cheers! ;)

Av Influenza Surveillance

Last Thu I received a call from Unc Ash, " Ei, Pamela. Come to DSV (main faculty hall) at 1.45pm. Emergency. Must come." It was 1.40pm.

So I quickly returned all the patient files to the front office (clinic registrar) and headed to DSV. Thr, my class was told to join the Avian Influenza Surveillance Team, and we were to stay at Institut Pengurusan veterinar at Cheras, probably for a duration of 1 week. It was not a good news, (at least to me) for I had already lined up the list of "things to do when I go back KB". But it's ok.

"Berkhidmat untuk negara!" "Mari kita berjuang!" I heard my classmates cheering. A-hem.

So there we went on the very same day, ate and slept in the same place. There were more than 60 DVM5 (my class) who went there, and about 40++ staffs from all around Malaysia, which summed up to be more than 100 people helping the nation to fight. We were divided into 30++ groups (at least 4 ppl/group), and on the next day, each group gathered the stuffs and headed to different directions. We carried the swabs (ear cotton), transport media, masks, gloves, disinfectants, water, food, nets, and other stuffs in 4-wheels.

We were supposed to visit the area, watch for any bird or chicken, and take at least 1 cloacal (anus) swab from one bird from a population. The swabs carry the mucus or epithelia that will tell us whether it's positive or negative for HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza strain virus). So we'll send the swabs to the labs later lo.

On the first day (Fri) my group surveyed Sentul, where we covered La Salle, Convent Sentul n other nearby areas within my assigned 1km surveillance area. The next day, miraculously, my group was assigned to Kepong area, good enough, it covered my home n neighbourhood, including my 2ndary school (SMKB). I took some time off to visit my family, and the feeling was undescribable. How i missed home. It's been 4weeks since i last went home. Watching Toffee crying terribly for me, and I can't even hug him (for I consider myself "contaminated", coz i had direct contact with chickens) was the worst feeling.

Thank God, the survey is now over, and I'm back to faculty. Hopefully all the results for the swabs will be negative. God willing.

wisdom..

thousand apologies for not updating my blog for almost 3 weeks, (or more? cant recall). was too busy medicating, nursing dogs n cats, then attending surgeries.. then retrieving long-lost notes, searching for endless calls for information n stuffs. my project thesis is not fully done yet, and havn start a bit on my conference. Thank God, i finally got a case, a good one i think, on the last day of my rotation in the small animal ward. :) Praise the Lord.. ;)

today i'll be talking about wisdom tooth, hehe.. too bad for those tricked by my hanging title. :P *sengaja*

I believe tat many of us (esp young adults) are having the same prob - wisdom teeth derived pain, crooked teeth, stress..etc. for more info on the physiology of wisdom teeth, u may click here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_tooth. not sure whether the info is reliable, though.

basically wisdom teeth are the 3rd molars which started growing when we reach adulthood. some ppl got it earlier, some later. for ppl who have enough spaces on their jaw for the teeth to grow, then there's no prob for them. for ppl who unfortunately didn't have enough spaces, this spelt trouble to them (includin me) - they'll get the wisdom teeth syndrome, which included pain in the jaw, teeth, headache, mild fever for a week or so, some infection like sorethroat, and sadly, they'll start noticing their once beautifully alligned teeth (which they're proud of) started to get crooked.

the syndrome comes and goes, until the wisdom teeth grows out entirely. For people whom the syndrome never seem to go off, it keeps comin back despite the 3 (or more) years that went by.. it simply means tat there just aint enuf space for the smart teeth to grow. they have to opt for..

Remove tat teeth. surgically. which is an awfully painful procedure, despite all the analgesics n anti-inflammatory supplements, it's painful.

otherwise...

the teeth will grow onto your cheek bone - which could cause other complications, infection being one of them. Hmm... wonder is facial deformity one of it too?

TQ Mr. gentleman

Oh great (?!) the CNY holiday is finally over. This week I'm stationed in the small animal ward, where i have to treat and tend to sick cats/dogs, beginning from 7am, all the way till 9.30pm at night. how many hours is tat? 8,9,10...14.30hours. as i stay in a rather remote hostel, i need transportation (coz at 6.45am and 9.45pm the sky is pitch dark alrite, a rationale girl won't go home alone during these hours) back n fro my hostel to the faculty, where the veterinary hospital is.

So i've got this fren, Kamha (bukan nama sebenar) who stays in the same hostel as well as working in the ward with me. It was really kind n nice of him to send my frens n I (all gals) back n fro everyday.

However, yesternite was indeed a surprise. He had to stay back to help his group mates settle some prob. It was 9.45pm. 3 of us gals were already complaining of tired.. sighing.. etc. waiting to go home n SLEEP. instead of asking us wait for him, he offered to send us home first, and then drive back to faculty to again to help his groupmate. When he offered this, I was dumb-struck. "hey.. is he kidding?" When he elaborated more, my mind was running haphazardly, "He's not joking, is he?" "Is he consciously conscious?" "Maybe i forgot to clean my ears this morning?"

I was still dazed, when everyone started packing n moving towards the car. "oh boy.. he was a real gentleman."

I don't understand, do you?

it's the holiday week. good. ironically, sad for ppl who's on ward duty next week. why? coz we're forced to be back in the ward on friday?

"Why?"
"cek the file, see the patient that you're going to look after next week. just see, don't have to touch."
"alright.. then?"
"then go home. Come back agiain tomoro (Sat), do a simple physical examination on ur patients?"
"do i get to treat the animals, walk them...?"
"no. just cek them up, then leave. come back and start workin only tomoro."

at first when my group mate told me this "good" news, i took it very lightly, "oh yah.. come back early, i can study earlier." but now it seems tat all my CNY programs are stuck on fri n sat, and these are the days when i have to drop by the ward for less than 1 hour to occupy the entire 2 days!

CAN ANYONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME THE RATIONALE BEHIND THIS???

why can't we just cek the file on sat? or sunday? wat's the point in making it fri, and then again sat doing almost nothing??

a fun-filled day

yesterday was a fun-filled day, n i mean, whole-day. well, maybe not tat fun when my facial muscles started cramping due to excessive smiling, laughin n talkin...

In the mornig, tx to NChiann, the superb-in-keepin-in-touch gal.. i first met my long lost fren, gaius, we last met 14 years ago! coincidentally, i came across his name while reading the bible last week. he couldn't recog me, bt thank goodness, he remembered that "Pamela Ong" once existed. then off we went to look for my primary school teacher, a very dedicated, caring, lovely lady, Ms Pearly Yap whom i havent seen for the past 10 years (i think)! meeting them forced me to dig n recall all the buried memories within, little by littl they came to light.. but all were stil in pieces. it was really challenging.. most of us looking blur sometimes recalling flashes of scenes which once were our life. as we sent gaius home, we met another primary school teacher - Pn Jason Ng.. ooo.. really, 14 yrs never seeen her.. well, she stil looked the same. ;)

Later we continued the day at my secondary teacher, Pn LenaGan's hse.. makan talk as usual.. this time not so much of recalling things, much to my relief! then i played a little with her 5 n 3-yr-ol sons, unfortunately, due to hyperactivity, the 3-yr old hurt his abdomen after jumpin off the sofa. *ouch!

then was dinner to send an ol buddy, winnie off to aus.. we (pLee,Su, Ma,NC) went to the curve's (which some of us ulu ulu ppl never been to, hehe) viva pizza. mm.. i stil prefer pizza hut lots lots much. then off to u-chen's hse.. there i became a hair-stylist for children. honestly, it was a lousy touch, but just as long as the children liked it, I'm glad to do it. FOC. ;) it was reali fun keepin in touch with one another, understandin wat each other is bz with currently, learnin abt other fren's updates.. it was fun. plus all the jokes n laughter n nonsenses tat came along it, it was simply happily fun. after so much time not seeing/hearing from each other..

then at night, my family had yee-sang.. n we shared a lot of thoughts together.. it's really been a long time since we last sat together, sharing such thoughts.. Bless the Lord for all His blessings.

an onus

Pak Sheikh (a respected lecturer) used to repeat his old phrase, "it is your (student) onus to find out what you do not know".

i couldn't disagree with him. who can? if someone wants to learn, how can he expect to learn if he doesn't go seek for the info in the first place? In a common scenario, many students tend to grow senses of "anti-certain-teachers", particularly teachers who really meant good for the student. Strict, but it's for the student's sake. Unsurprisingly, most students will dislike, if not hate such teachers. Well? Some gutsy students even got the phrase, "Go lodge a complaint!" at the tip of their tongues. students.. students.. *shaking the head*

Some comments took my attention, which were quite laughable. Some students, despite knowing damn sure that they don't work their onus, started blaming those teachers who meant good for the students. Other students who finally realize that the onus lies in their very own hand, started questioning each other, "is this the result of our education system's failure?"

Well? I won't say tat our education system is fool-proof.. yet...

As the old saying says, "Gajah depan mata tak nampak, nyamuk seberang sungai nampak."

Please appreciate what people are doing for us. Look at the bright side, be optimistic. When you started seeing things at the wrong direction, you get shadows, and not sun shine.

Pls spread d newZ

This is how DBKL Klinik kembiri looked ilke. Located in Setapak, it's a place where everyone should make an effort to visit, esp the vet-to-bes. Here u'll get the idea of how severe is the stray cats'n dogs population in Selangor n KL alone. For more info, u can visit my previous post at http://pam-pam.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_pam-pam_archive.html. Here r some pix i took today.

Dogs are kept in cages accordin to the dates they were caught. Poor bitch with 6 shiverin n withering pups, whose yelpin and whining has no one, except their mama, to tend to.

Many of these dogs have collar and license on, which means they had an owner. Owners have few days to claim these cuties before these cuties are given the sleepin-beauty jabs. In just a matter of days...

Glad to see that many of these dogs are lovely adorables which hunger for human love and touch. Sad to know the bleak future lying ahead of them.

Last but not least, please neuter your pets if you could not afford to find their youngs a good home. You're being kind to them, and the unborn animals. Not cruel, definitely.

* neuter = to make the animal sterile by removing the reproductive organs (uterus, testes)

eye-dropping.

I was checkin my mails today, when i saw a mail from SPCA Selangor in my inbox, then somthing attracted me "Dog and Cat's fur in China".

Huh? I couldn't believe what i read. so i clicked on it.. and waited.. and guess? once the page was completely uploaded, i started hearing dogs barking cats meowing.. crashing sounds.. and chinese speaking men talkig and laughing about behind the camera.

My God! How could we allow these to happen?

My friends, please spread the message around - stop wearing fur. whoever's fur they're wearing. It's disgusting to have someone's skin atop of our own skin. yucks!

Fixed # 6

oh wow! it's been > 3months since i last update my "Fixed" episodes. poor Tassy.. ok.. so here goes the 6th episode. Do refresh ur mind with the previous episode, Fixed #5, in my Sept archive. hehe.. ;)

---

KL, 26 December 2002

Tassy looked at the patient card. Patient, Tooty. She smiled. Owner, Jack. She held the card nearer. Jack Chou. Immediately flashes of scenes came back into her mind. The way he held her hand gently yet firmly away from the mischieves.. scenes of him whispering softly to her ears..

"Tooty, WAIT!"

A white, approx 5 kg peke was running into the consultation room, towards her, happily wagging its tail, sweeping the floor with her long coat, breathing out snores. Tassy lifted her up to the consultation table.

"Tooty, tooty! Why would anyone name you tooty? u poor fellow.. come, show me ur toothy! Grr.." Tassy playfully pulled open Tooty's jaws. "Hmm.. you've got a...."

"Dr. Pang." It was a deep, sexy male voice with a solemn tone. A voice so familiar which Tassy's subconscious never ceased hearing. She looked up at Tooty's owner, who was already standing right opposite the consultation table.

Eyes met eyes. Her heart skipped a beat. Two beats. Tachycardia! Apnea! Standing right across her was her first love, and she had prayed for him to be her last. Someone whom had visited her in her nightly dreams... someone whom she had longed for his touch...

"Tassy. I never thought that it's you." Jack continued.
"So... you're for real? Jack? Is it really you?" Tassy's eyes widened.

He nodded, slowly, eyes gleamed with tears. Tassy quickly placed Tooty back on the floor, and rushed into Jack's already wide-opened arms.

"I'm sorry I stopped calling... I.."
"Hush.. just hush.. you called everynight, didn't you know that?"

How did Christmas start? .

Since about 400 AD, Christians have celebrated the birth of Jesus. 'Christ' means 'Messiah' or 'Anointed One' - the title given to Jesus - and 'Mass' was a religious festival. This is why Christmas is called the incarnation, a word which means “in the flesh.” In the birth of Jesus, the eternal, all-powerful and all-knowing Creator came to earth in the flesh.

Why would God do such a thing? Why would he come as a baby, instead of appearing in power and majesty? Why make himself a true man and live among us, when he knew full well how terribly he would be treated? (visit http://www.christiananswers.net/christmas/home.html for the answers)

2000 years ago, there was no room at the inn of Bethlehem for Mary and Joseph and the soon-to-be-born baby Jesus... Today, there is no room for the traditional Christ of Christmas in the holiday advertising campaigns of many retailers.

In the West today, the real meaning of Christmas is often forgotten. It has become a non-religious holiday. More children believe in Father Christmas (Santa Claus) than in Jesus. Christmas Day is a time for eating and drinking too much and watching television. Christmas carols have been bypassed in favor of generic holiday songs about Santa. No longer do hearty shouts of “Merry Christmas” fill the air; the popular slogan of the day is “Happy Holidays.”

But the real Christmas story is found in the Christian Bible. It is told in two different books: Matthew and Luke chapters 1 and 2. If you have no Bible, you can read these chapters online. You may think that the story of the birth of Jesus, and the way that the West celebrates Christmas today, do not seem to have many connections..” '

It's difficult

The four week-holiday is finally over. In another word, the four-week period for us final year vet students to finish our projects is finally over.

Glory and praise to the Lord, for I was able to finish my project on time, despite the many stumbling blocks at the beginning. So I spent this final week preparing my thesis while walking, chatting around the faculty, and I eventually found that many of my coursemates haven't finish their projects.

When they found that I've finished mine, most came with the same remark, "Wow, your project is so simple!" They didn't realize that I started mine 2 weeks before the official date, when everyone else was bz studying for their finalz, and there I was, cracking my brain abt my project. Some even said tat they couldn't believe I took up such a simple experiment as a project. Well, the fact is they didn't realize that I repeated my experiments and readjusted everything thrice. The fact that I stayed back in the lab alone until late at night almost everyday.. lookin into the microscopes 13h x 6days x 5weeks...

Anyway the nightmare is now over. And I'm grateful to God for that.

What most people see is how difficult/important their very own projects are. Of course, each of us does this project for maybe just once in a lifetime, if it's not meaningful to us, we wouldn't even embark on it rite? I don't blame anyone for stating that my project was indeed a simple one. In fact, the thought of "simple" gives me a sense of relief.. consoling my terrified soul, tat what I went thru durin the last 5 weeks ain't so bad after all. ;) Looking back now, I do agree with them.. it's simple. ;) (but hard). hehe.. watever..

I don't deny that there are a few projects which I could never dare imagine of.. like withdrawing blood from a live, ferocious croc.. or ultrasound carcasses.. or doing postmortem everyday.. or restraining wild stalks (yeee...) .. running horses under the sun (ouch, my skin!).. whew.. and I don't want to imagine myself doing that. I'm just not tough enough.

To all my vet coursemates, all the very best to you. For those that haven't finish ur project, "Giddy up!" Say a little prayer for urself, it doesn't hurt. =) For those are already working on thesis, "Giddy up!" It's never too early to finish a thesis.

oh yah.. comprehensive is nearing.. ;) hehehe..

war against mosquitoes

yesternite i spent at bkt expo, for horse (MERS) endurance race, where i had to sit in the middle of the golf field from 10pm to 10am the next day! wow.. the adventure was horrendous.. zaidi and I were viciously attacked, mercilessly, infinitely by all mosquitoes of the world!! (i dun mind exaggerating here, coz i'm reali in pain!!) They bit through my jeans! ouch!

Goodness! We couldn't even sleep well, every few minutes I heard them buzzing around my ears, then my hand and legs were stingingly painful.. then my lips and face were slightly swollen - all due to mosquito bite! ouch!

Thank God the experience is over. Now as I'm typing this, there are at least eight 2-4cm diameter swellings on my right leg, at least four on my left, at least 6 on both my hands! they're really very temptingly itchy!!

So now.. my friends.. please do something for me.. KILL MOSQUITOES!
"kap sat man lun" (kill without questioning!)

aaaaaa... very itchy.. grr..

*scratch scratch*

fascinating

sometimes my frens ask me, "What kind of guy do you like?" or "What attracts you?" or a general one, "What kind of guys do gals like?" Well, they asked the right person, coz you know, a pro is talking here. *wink

enough of self-proclaiming. hehe..

the answer is of course, "beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder". Different gal likes different guy. But there is one thing in common..

wat do you think?

nope.. not for good-lookin..
nope.. not for wealth..

but one thing that never fails to fascinate gals - confident yet humble and sincere guy.

(I'm saying fascinated, not necessarily mean the gal will fall in lov or etc.. u know. *wink )
